| APLICATION SHEET MACHINES FOR DIAMOND CUTTING OF TUNGSTEN CARBIDE AND OTHER HARD METALS Carbides have become very important for cutting tools and deburring tools because of their wear characteristics. These very hard materials can only be cut with a high speed Diamond Bonded Cutting Wheel. Benetec manufactures a range of cutting machines for this application, from machines with manual control of cutting action to fully automatic machines with magazines for loading the Carbide rods 300 mm/12 in to 480 mm/18 in. The manual cutting machines are based on the Labcut 250. The machine is shown below with the side lever to raise/lower the cutting head. A view under the canopy shows the set-up for handling carbide rods. In order to obtain a good quality cut surface without chipping it is necessary to pay attention to the clamping of the carbide rods. The material is clamped by two independent pneumatic vices. The vice surfaces are carbide tipped for long life. The infeed is long enough to introduce a 480/18 in, rod. An end stop with micrometer adjustment is clamped in the outfeed and can be set along a measuring scale. Flexible coolant jets can be directed to this area of cutting. The cutting head can be fitted with a diamond cutting wheel up to 230 mm in diameter. A hydrocheck is fitted to the cutting head to give and adjustable controlled cutting action irrespective operator. The vices are activated when the cutting head lever is operated. If the emphasis is on mostly larger rods of more than 25 mm/1 in, diameter then it may be necessary to use a more powerful machine. The Labcut 350 with its 5.5KW/7.5HP motor is recommended in this case. Semi Automatic and Fully Automatic Machines These machines are based on the 3000 Series Microfine frame. The cutting head is pneumatically operated and controlled by a PLC program which also looks after the cutting cycle. As with the Labcut 250 there are two independently operated pneumatic vices. The following machines are typical of the range offered to customer specification Semi-Automatic Cutting Machines - in which the carbide rod is pushed against a retracting end stop which activates the cutting cycle: the vice closes, the cutting head lowers and a diamond wheel cuts through the material, and returns to a position above the material, the end stop retracts and cut pieces fall down a chute. Fully Automatic Cutting machine. Carbide rods are loaded onto an inclined magazine and fed one at a time to a bar feed mechanism. The rods are clamped and cut to a length defined by a retracting end stop. The cut pieces are ejected into a collector. The cutting head can be fitted with a diamond cutting wheel up to 230 mm dia.
