Trimming, Cutting & Preparing Composite Sheet Materials for Test Procedures & Production - with the model 5660 Sliding Cutter

Composite sheets are usually produced with flashing on the sides. They have to be cut so that they are precisely rectangular. Material up to 1 inch/25mm from the edge must be removed so that material tests are reproducible. The 5600 series Sliding Cutter features a large area rigid top plate running on precision rails to give a smooth accurate sliding movement of 24in/600mm. The diamond cutting blade is powered by a 2.2KW/3 HP 3 phase motor. Blade diameters from 6in/150mm to 14in/350mm can be easily fitted

The 5600 series Sliding Cutter

  • The cutting blade is guarded as the sheet is pushed through the rotating blade. Coolant can be supplied to the blade during cutting.
  • Accurate X-Y adjustable fences are provided on the table so that the sheet can be squared accurately.
  • A variable speed option is available for the blade so that the optimum cutting speed can be chosen.
  • The form of the superstructure can be varied for different applications

Although the 5600 Slider Cutter is a manual cutting machine the precision table movement and fence positioning means that composite sheets can be sectioned accurately and test pieces can be prepared with appropriate fixturing.

A compact version of the model 5660, model 5620 is available. This has a reduced table movement for trimming smaller composite sheets 300mm x 300mm /12in x 12in

Options

Coolant circulation

Cutting with lubricant is preferred wherever possible for the highest possible cut surface quality. Lubricant guides are provided on the table surface which run the coolant into a tanl located in the base cabinet. A recirculating pump ensures a constant flow of coolant

Wheel speed variation

Allows the wheel speed to be varied between 1500rpm and 4000 rpm thus permitting selection of optimum wheel speed for a particular size and type of diamond blade

Special Jigging

Diamond Cutting Wheels for cutting Composite Sheets

It cannot be emphasized sufficiently how important is the choice of cutting blade The use of cutting fluid is always recommended for the highest quality cut surface. In some cases the use of lubricant is not possible and therefore we have developed a range of diamond tipped cutting blades for both wet and dry cutting.

Cutting with lubricant

Developed for use with wet composite materials, this metal bonded cutting blade produces a high quality surface finish. If no hole size is specified a 12.7mm/ 1/2in hole will be supplied

Other Equipment for preparing test coupons of composite materials

Mechanical properties of sheet composites need to be evaluated and to this end test coupons need to be cut from sheet for the different tensile tests. Thus the requirement for a cutting machine with a travelling head evolved to cut larger composite sheets into strips. Since the mechanical test results depend on having parallel test strips with smooth sides, the accuracy and quality of cut pieces using the travelling Plate Saw is important. The choice of diamond cutting blade is equally important for optimum results.
